I grew up around work that mattered. Responsibility was normal. Showing up was expected. When something needed to be done, you did it. That mindset carried me early into public service.

I spent 28 years as a firefighter and paramedic. Over that time, I worked in almost every environment you can imagine. Structure fires, medical emergencies, technical rescues, water rescues, offshore racing safety, movie and stunt set safety, special events, and large-scale operations. I worked locally and traveled extensively, supporting operations from New York to California, Puerto Rico to Canada, and many states in between. I was part of specialized rescue teams and safety units where preparation, discipline, and decision-making mattered because mistakes had real consequences.

That career shaped how I think. You learn how people react under stress. You learn how systems fail. You learn how important communication, trust, and leadership are when people don't know what to do next. You also learn humility. You see people at their worst moments, and you learn that your job is not to impress anyone. Your job is to help, to protect, and to guide.

Over time, I realized that the skills I was using every day weren't limited to emergency services. Problem solving. Risk assessment. Clear communication. Staying calm when other people are overwhelmed. Taking responsibility when things are complicated. Those skills apply everywhere.

Transition To Mortgage

When I transitioned into the mortgage industry, I saw very quickly that most people experience the home buying and financing process as one of the most stressful events of their lives. They don't understand the rules. They're afraid of being judged. They're worried about making the wrong decision. They're overwhelmed by paperwork, timelines, and terminology. In many ways, emotionally, it feels like an emergency to them.

That's where my background fit naturally.

Today, I am a mortgage broker and branch leader with 1st Response Mortgage, powered by Barrett Financial Group. I work with a wide range of clients, including first-time homebuyers, repeat buyers, investors, self-employed borrowers, commission-based earners, first responders, veterans, and people with complex financial situations. I specialize in files that require strategy, explanation, and problem solving, not just basic qualification.
